概要 | The question of whether people perform altruistic behaviour deliberately or intuitively is a major enigma in neuroscience as well as social science, and has been actively studied in recent years. In the present study, two economic games, the ultimatum game and the dictator game (DG), were conducted with a sample of 411 non-students to investigate the relationship between altruistic behaviour in the games and cortical thickness in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), which is involved in deliberative decision making. The results showed that people with thinner cortex in the DLPFC were more altruistic in the DG, and that those who showed higher altruism in the DG performed less well in a task requiring strategic decision-making (Machiavellian task). This indicates that people perform altruistic behaviour non-strategically and intuitively, and that egocentric behaviour may suppress these impulsive altruistic behaviours. |
